“There’s always a story behind the numbers,” Steven’s financial advisor told him. While in a meeting with his financial advisor, he decided to change his career path from marketing to accounting.
Steven grew up in Saskatchewan, Canada, where he received his marketing degree and started his career. Steven has always had an eye for numbers, and over the years, he became more intrigued with companies’ financial reports than with the marketing aspect of his job. After getting his dual citizenship, he went on to become a CPA. “My mom always told me that I had an eye for accounting—I probably should’ve listened to her because now I’m here at Boise State getting my master in accountancy,” Bennett said.
Steven is in his final year of the master of accountancy program and plans to obtain the IMA’s Certified Management Accountant certification (CMA) so that he can help companies make informed decisions about their corporate strategy. He will continue to oversee the accounting for a power plant and trucking division but set his goals to become a chief financial officer within the next 7 years.
