Steps to Success!

GO TO CLASS! - Class is easy to skip for all kinds of reasons - boredom, it's not interesting to you, or it's a sunny (rainy) day.  Remember, if you can learn to handle to work that doesn't seem interesting to you, you will develop the essential habits of success in college and in the world of work.

LEARN THE RULES - Ignorance is not a blissful state or a valid excuse.  Read the Boise State University Student Code of Conduct, the Schedule of Classes for rules, regulations and timelines.  Make the rules work for you!

LEARN TIME MANAGEMENT - No one is advocating a lack of social life, but proper use of time will help you succeed in school. The excuse "I work best under pressure" is a non-productive rationalization.  Professors view you as an adult and do not see lack of planning in your part as their emergency.

ACCEPT CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM - Constructive criticism is not meant to be a personal attack and it will help you reach your potential. The best way to overcome your academic problems is to meet them head-on.

GET INVOLVED IN CAMPUS LIFE - Being part of the campus community is as important as going to class, writing papers and taking exams.  This doesn't mean join every group, but be selective and participate.  Becoming involved will only enhance your college experience - and look good on your resume.

REALIZE CONFUSION IS NORMAL - Don't get upset if you haven't mastered all facets of college during the first semester.  It is normal to feel confused.  The best way to overcome the confusion is to ask questions and develop coping skills.

GET TO KNOW SOME PROFESSORS - Professors are there to help you learn and reach your goals.  They are interested in talking with you.  Utilize their office hours they list on their syllabi to ask questions and get to know them.

BE PATIENT WITH YOURSELF - You will make some social and academic mistakes.  Rest assured you are not doomed.  When you realize you made a mistake, do what you can to correct it so it doesn't grow and create bigger problems.

MAKE YOUR OWN DECISIONS - Asking for advice is always wise, but ultimately you need to take charge of your own destiny and make the choice that will best suit you. Don't be afraid to take a chance when options are available and then take responsibility for your decisions.

YOU ARE IN SCHOOL FOR YOUR EDUCATION - You need to be seeking an education for you.  If you are going to college to please anyone else, you will end up pleasing no one, especially yourself.

ASK QUESTIONS IN THE CLASSROOM - There are no dumb questions concerning the class subject. If you don't know or understand something, then chances are there are others in the class that don't either.
