Professor Mike Bixby is the recipient of the 2006 foundation
'Scholars Award for Teaching.' This is the University's highest recognition for teaching excellence and only one award is given each year.
(Awards are also given for service and research). The awards began in 1992, and Mike is the first COBE
recipient to receive of any of the three awards
(teaching, service, research).
In receiving the award, Mike was recognized for his concern for social issues and the legal and ethical responsibilities of individuals and businesses to society and those less fortunate. Mike earned his law degree
(J.D.) from the University of Michigan. He and his bride, Sharon spent two years as Peace Corps volunteers in Jamaica, where he served as a business adviser to a fishermen's cooperative. Mike then worked as an attorney in Michigan and started teaching business law courses at Eastern Michigan. He
later joined the COBE faculty in 1981.
Mike has taught abroad three times (Italy, Spain, & Chile) and has shared some of these experiences
in brown bag lunch series. In class, Mike consciously tries to demonstrate an appreciation for different cultures and nationalities. Some of you
may know that he created the faculty Diversity Committee in the College and continues to serve as chair of the committee. Mike is the lead author for a student-friendly textbook,
The Legal Environment of Business. This book, used nationally, is now in it third edition. Mike is a great teacher and dedicated COBE faculty
member; we're lucky to have him on our team.
