Recommendations for Participants

Etiquette of Mentorship

We suggest incorporating the following reminders into your meetings:

Students:

  • Be an effective listener. Take notes
  • Seriously consider all advice
  • Ask for feedback and evaluation
  • Follow through on all your commitments
  • Be willing to share differences with your mentor after you have clarified a statement
  • Say thank you in person and in a written note

Mentors:

  • Focus your attention on the student and their interests
  • Let the students know what you can do or are willing to do
  • Tell the students that you do not expect them to follow all of your suggestions
  • Value the student’s time as if it were your own
  • Be prepared to end the relationship once it has served its purpose
  • Be prepared to answer the request for a continued relationship

Recommendations for Students

You are being offered a unique Boise State experience in the MBA Honors Track. In order to be accepted into the program you have already agreed to:

  • Commitment: Participants must commit to attending all meetings during the year. With the small size of the group, full participation will measurably enhance the quality of the seminar experience
  • Confidentiality: Each participant must agree to hold all group discussions in strict confidence
  • Openness: Each participant should have a “lifelong student” mindset and be willing to be an active participant in a group setting.

In order for your time to be the most productive, it is important you plan out your objectives and be committed to them. Here are a few suggestions to accomplish this task:

  • Determine what you want to achieve through the mentor relationship
  • It is important to not over commit your time – be realistic in the time you actually dedicate to this relationship and respect the amount of time your mentor can spend as well
  • Be open to suggestions, but most importantly, ask questions
  • Ask for feedback; challenge yourself
  • If you disagree with your mentor, say so, but do so in a positive manner
  • Set up the next meeting’s purpose, activities and timeframe at the end of every meeting
