Etiquette of Mentorship

We suggest incorporating the following reminders into your meetings:

Students:

  • Be an effective listener. Take notes
  • Seriously consider all advice
  • Ask for feedback and evaluation
  • Follow through on all your commitments
  • Be willing to share differences with your mentor after you have clarified a statement
  • Say thank you in person and in a written note

Mentors:

  • Focus your attention on the student and their interests
  • Let the students know what you can do or are willing to do
  • Tell the students that you do not expect them to follow all of your suggestions
  • Value the student’s time as if it were your own
  • Be prepared to end the relationship once it has served its purpose
  • Be prepared to answer the request for a continued relationship
