Joseph Peri Named Acting President and Chief Executive Officer New York, NY – The Council For Economic Education (CEE), a leading international economic education organization, announced today that President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Robert F. Duvall, will retire effective …

Joseph Peri Named Acting President and Chief Executive Officer

New York, NY – The Council For Economic Education (CEE), a leading international economic education organization, announced today that President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Robert F. Duvall, will retire effective July 31, 2009. CEE named Joseph Peri, current Chief Operating Officer, as Acting President and Chief Executive Officer, effective August 1, 2009. The Board of Directors will conduct an external search and evaluate internal candidates for a permanent replacement.

“I believe this is an exceptionally good time to make this change, both for CEE and for me, personally and professionally,” said Duvall, CEE President and CEO. “I have a compelling opportunity this Fall to return to my ‘first love,’ teaching. As we embark upon the execution of our strategic growth plans for CEE, the timing is right for new leadership.”

“Under Bob’s leadership, CEE has become the leading advocate and curriculum content provider for K-12 students here and abroad,” said CEE Board Chairman Craig Donohue. “Bob and his team have transformed CEE by writing and publishing the Voluntary National Content Standards in Economics, conducting the first-ever National Summits on Economic and Financial Literacy, and more than tripling CEE’s revenues while dramatically increasing our program offerings. The Board of Directors looks forward to working with Joe and the entire CEE team to further our important mission of advancing financial literacy and economic education.”

Other Commentary

“Bob has successfully led CEE with great distinction for 15 years,” said Gary Stern, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis and CEE Director for over 20 years. “Through his efforts, CEE has significantly broadened its reach among elementary and secondary school teachers, enabling an increasing number of students to gain an understanding of basic economic and financial principles.”

John Dillon, Former CEE Chairman and Life Director, observed, “Bob Duvall assumed the leadership of CEE when clear direction and commitment were essential. He has done an outstanding job in fulfilling CEE’s mission and driving economic literacy during his tenure as President and CEO.”

Dr. Pam Smith, President of the Mississippi Council on Economic Education, summarized the feelings of those in the field about Duvall’s accomplishments, “I am thankful for everything the CEE and Bob have done to move our vital agenda forward. All who care deeply about strengthening and preparing our youth for success in the global economy owe CEE and Bob a great deal for their vision for economic, financial and entrepreneurial education.”

About Joseph Peri

Joseph A. Peri has been Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Council for Economic Education (CEE) since 2000, having originally joined CEE in November 1995 as Vice President for Finance. As a member of CEE’s senior management group, Mr. Peri has been integrally involved in all facets of CEE’s business – finance, administration, advocacy, program, resource development, and sales and marketing.

Prior to joining CEE, Mr. Peri was Assistant Vice President for Finance at The Commonwealth Fund, a large private, grant-making foundation located in New York, where he spent 12 years in a series of financial, administrative and program management roles. Mr. Peri began his professional career with the firm of Deloitte Haskins and Sells (now Deloitte). He is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Financial Planner®, and graduated cum laude from Fordham University. Mr. Peri currently serves on the Board of Directors of the national Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, the Connecticut Council on Economic Education (Chairman), and the Fairfield County (Connecticut) Children’s Choir (President). He resides in Fairfield, Connecticut with his wife Nina and daughters Caroline (20) and Victoria (17).

Written by: Lisa Haeberle

The Council for Economic Education’s annual conference was held October 8-11, 2008 in Biloxi, Mississippi. Lisa Haeberle, a graduate student at Idaho State University, presented her research paper at the conference. It was a wonderful learning experience for Lisa.

The focus of her research is how finanical education affects the money management behaviors and attitudes of college age students. It is shown in the research that financial education does affect a student’s money management behaviors. In an article concerning college and finances, the author states, “Don’t expect a young person to have any more self-discipline than adults… College-age people are often very impulsive, and sooner or later that will feel there’s something they can’t live without, they’ll charge charge it and figure somehow they’ll pay for it later” (Dunnan, 1991, p. 85). This mentality is unfortunately alive today. Many young adults do not want to face financial burdens. And yet, had financial education been given in the first place, maybe students would not have this mind set. Research indicates the need for financial education in an article entitled, “Academic Persistence in Higher Education.” The following is an excerpt from the article:

Recently researchers have developed models that explore how finances interact with other factors that influence college persistence. St. John, Cabrera, Nora, and Asker (2000) report that in national studies, finance related factors such as student aid, tuition, and living costs, explained about one half of the total variance in the student persistent process. Cabrera, Stampen, and Hansen (1990) recognized that the ability to pay for college education reduced an important barrier to participation in both academia and social dimensions of university life. This freedom from financial concerns increased the likelihood of students’degree completion. (as cited in Reynolds & Weagley, 2003, Review of related literature section, para. 2).

The research indicates that “[m]any students come academically prepared for higher education, but are gambling their education on inadequate financial preparedness” (Adams, 2005, para. 3). A study conducted by USA Funds on financial literacy skills found that “students quickly realize they need to learn about financial literacy, it is a priority for them and they expect their institution to fill that need. The vast majority of students also rate the training they do receive as low to unsatisfactory” (Adams, 2005, para. 3). With statistics like this it is not surprising students are leaving college behind. Universities need to provide students with financial education in order for the students to succeed academically. Ruth Adams of Seattle Pacific University found that “it takes as few as 10 hours [of instruction] to change financial illiteracy into financial literacy” (2005, para. 4). After this instruction, students improved in three ways:

58% of students developed improved spending habits

56A% of students developed improved saving habits (2005).

Students’ financial literacy and education are vital components to any university and the students who attend them. With more and more students stating financial concerns for leaving school, universities are in need of a financial program on campus. Research has shown that it is possible to have such programs at univeristies through the financial centers that have been implemented on various campuses.

It is important to keep in mind the lack of financial literacy among college students is at an all time high and this contributes to students leaving school. Along with financial illiteracy, credit card knowledge is lacking. As universities implement financial education programs, credit counseling should be introduced along with the other financial education topics. In implementing these types of education tools, college students will be prepared to graduate with an understanding of their economic life and therefore be prepared to contribute to society in their chosen field of study.

IDAHO “MYSTERY STUDENT” WINS NATIONAL ESSAY CONTEST ON INVESTING AND ECONOMICS The Idaho Council on Economic Education at Boise State University has announced that a Bishop Kelly High School student has won first place in a national investment essay contest. …

IDAHO “MYSTERY STUDENT” WINS NATIONAL ESSAY CONTEST ON INVESTING AND ECONOMICS

The Idaho Council on Economic Education at Boise State University has announced that a Bishop Kelly High School student has won first place in a national investment essay contest. He or she will only learn about this achievement at an award assembly scheduled for Feb. 6, 2009 at the Bishop Kelly Carley Center at 2:20 pm. Until then, the winner remains a mystery. 7,000 Idaho students competed with 740,000 students nationwide in the “Stock Market Game.” Many also wrote an essay in the national writing competition, “InvestWrite.”

Leon Maynard, President of the Idaho Council, said, “The Stock Market Game and the InvestWrite Essay contest have been an important part of financial literacy education in Idaho for many years. They are educationally challenging and fun at the same time. We welcome all 4th – 12th grade teachers and parents who are interested in getting their students involved.”

The Idaho Council on Economic Education, co-hosted by the College of Business & Economics and the College of Education, provides these and many other programs as part of its mission to increase economic and financial literacy statewide. Dr. Pat Shannon, Dean of COBE, explained, “The Idaho Council is one of our major community outreach programs. Through its activities, Boise State has helped train and provide materials to well over 500 Idaho teachers and we reach more than 12,000 elementary and secondary students every year with essential information on personal financial management and economics.” Dr. Diane Boothe, Dean of the College of Education, added, “This is a great example of how a partnership between two Boise State colleges can make a real difference in the lives of Idaho’s teachers and students. Our sister universities are involved as well through our Centers at Idaho State, University of Idaho and College of
Southern Idaho.”

Idaho State Finance Director, Gavin Gee said, “It has never been more important that our students in Idaho learn about economics and investing. With the challenges our country and world are facing, we must return to basics and teach our children and grandchildren to work, spend wisely, save for the future and manage their resources.” The Idaho Department of Finance and Wells Fargo Bank were co-sponsors of last semester’s competitions. The mystery student at Bishop Kelly, who will soon be named this year’s national champion, will receive a laptop computer and trip to New York City where he or she will visit the New York Stock Exchange and other sites. Marta Watson, a Boise State graduate and the Bishop Kelly economics teacher who has introduced and coached
hundreds of students in these contests for many years, will also win a new laptop and trip to New York City where she will participate in a financial literacy conference this summer.

And wait, there’s more….the entire student body of Bishop Kelly High School will receive a Pizza Party from the Idaho Council on Economic Education and
the SIFMA Foundation for Investor Education, which sponsors the Stock Market Game and InvestWrite nationally.

How to Register Students for the Stock Market Game
Teachers from public, private, home and virtual schools can register their students for the “Stock Market Game” by calling or emailing the Idaho Council on Economic Education. 208-426-2926. SMG@boisestate.edu

The Idaho Council on Economic Education, hosted jointly by the College of Business and Economics and the College of Education at BSU, conducted 5 “International Economic Summit” programs throughout the state of Idaho this semester, reaching 2,500 high school students and many community supporters.

These events involved 150 business and community volunteers from CityGroup, US Bank, Wells Fargo, the Idaho Department of Finance, Commerce, the Governor’s Office, the State Board of Education and others. The most recent Economic Summit, conducted at Boise State on December 3, was hosted by Gavin Gee and Don Dietrich, Directors of the Idaho Departments of Finance and Commerce respectively. During this event the Idaho Council received grants from CitiGroup, US Bank and the Idaho Community Foundation.

Additionally, in recent months the Idaho Council, with the involvement of COBE, COE, the Boise State Foundation, and with special support form Senator Mike Crapo, conducted the first International Economic Summit for high school students in Shanghai China. This project involved 350 students from the top 25 high schools in China and was attended by multiple multi-national corporations doing business in that country. As a result of this project, for example, Starbucks, Microsoft and other firms have expressed interest in potential future sponsorships.

Through our partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, Boise State and the Idaho Council reached an additional 25,000 students this semester from hundreds of high schools in California, Washington, Hawaii, Arizona and other western states with the International Economic Summit, which the San Francisco Fed has described as “the most effective program available today for teaching students about international economics, free trade and globalization”. As a result of the success Boise State and the Idaho Council has had with the San Francisco Fed, other Federal Reserve Districts are now considering licensing the program for implementation in New York, Massachusetts, Illinois and surrounding states, all of which will certainly reflect positively on the College of Business and Economics and Boise State in general.

Anyone who may not be familiar with the Idaho Council on Economic Education, hosted by COBE since 1973, may visit its offices at E526 in the Education Building. The Council is always seeking professors, administrators, graduate students and others to become involved in its outreach programs and to facilitate workshops and events. If you are interested in becoming involved or just learning more, contact Leon Maynard at 426-1910, LeonMaynard@BoiseState.edu.
