From: Gary McCain, Chair
Undergraduate Policy Committee
Subject: First Meeting: Oct. 19, 3:00
Present: CIS/POM Dave Groebner, Emerson Maxson; Econ Dick Payne; Mgt Chris Baughn; Mkt/Fin Gary McCain
Chris Baughn read the charge and Gary McCain accepted the responsibility of chairing the committee for the year. It was noted that Accounting is not represented. Copies of the university curriculum change policy were distributed. Meetings will be called for 3:00 p.m., Mondays, as needed. The last day for University Curriculum Committee Approval for any changes to the 1999-2000 catalog is November 30, 1998. This presumes full approval of any revisions by those dates. McCain will provide the Dean with a copy of the policy as well as information on the timing and meaning of those policies to our committees charge. There was no business for the committee. Adjourn.
The above are the minutes of the first meeting for the Undergraduate Policy Committee:
Monday, October 19, 1998, 3:00 p.m.
I distributed copies of the updated "Guidelines for Preparing and Submitting Curriculum Changes" which the University Curriculum Committee has recently revised and has been sent to the Faculty Senate for final approval. I have attached a copy of that document for the Deans Office. Your will note that the policy specifically requires a formal needs assessment, including outside constituent review, for all major curriculum changes. Most individual curriculum actions are minor requests that reflect programmatic fine-tuning. Changes in course descriptions or title, semester scheduling, numbering, elective options, credit hours, program revision, prerequisites/corequisites, and credit for electives in major, minor, options, or emphasis have been recognized as routine curriculum management and are categorized as minor curriculum change requests. While these changes do go through committee approval the Faculty Senate reduced the bureaucratic hurdles, which includes omitting Senate review, to streamline the process. Proposals come to our committee through department representatives, so any curriculum input from accounting is currently impossible. All proposals are presented to the Deans early in the process to insure that they are aware of any changes considered in their colleges and to allow for feed back. I will make sure we follow those policies.
