EMBA’s did some real market research as part of their Competitiveness Through Marketing session taught by Associate Dean, Dr. Kirk Smith. Participants took part in this year’s annual Ho Ho vs. Little Debbie Challenge where a blind taste test is administered and a favorite is chosen between the two pastry cakes. Pictured are EMBA 5′s Fred Webster (Physician Liaison, West Valley Medical Center) and Tim Finup (Senior Oversight Consultant, Battelle Energy Alliance) taking their turn at the tasting table. The Creating Competitive Advantage course is part of the first year curriculum for executive participants.

Part of the EMBA experience at Boise State includes sessions taught by executive instructors. Learning from executives allows EMBA participants to see how the theory and tools they are exposed to in the classroom are used in the workplace. In November and December the second year EMBA 4 group had the privilege to learn from these six highly experienced executives. This group is just a small sample of the guests and instructors you will encounter as part of the program. The connections participants make throughout the program go far beyond the lessons learned that day and can evolve into business relationships long after graduation. Executive MBA’s participants Julie Lineberger (Idaho Urologic Institute, PA) and Julia Beard (Idaho Nephrology Associates, LLC) discuss qualitative marketing research techniques with Professor of Marketing Trina Sego, PHD on Friday, December 9 in the Bishop Barnwell Room of the Boise State Student Union Building. The Barnwell Room has been the home for the EMBA program since the program inception in 2006. Next year’s class of participants will complete the entire program in the new Micron College of Business and Economics building which features classroom spaces designed and reserved specifically for the exclusive use of the EMBA program. These new state of the art facilities will further enhance the already successful Executive MBA program.

Execs Travel to Vietnam

In October the 2^nd year EMBA class members attended their International Residency Week in Hanoi, Vietnam. The class learned about the rapidly emerging economy in Vietnam; met with various business organizations, industry representatives and the US Embassy; visited various cultural venues; and generally explored Hanoi and enjoyed immersing themselves in the culture.

Exec’s Kick Off Program at Sun Valley Resort

The new class of 2013 began their 2 year program with an intensive residency at Sun Valley Resort last week. The residency helped create the class’s learning community; develop study teams; and build the foundation for the two year MBA program. Topics taught during the first week included Team Building; Negotiations; Strategic Design & Growth; Design Thinking; and Leading Change. Senior faculty from Boise State University and industry experts included Dr.s Roy Glen and Kirk Smith; Dr.s Linda Clark-Santos and Keith Allred. New EMBA Group Starts Program

New Executive MBA Participants, Returning Participants, Alumni and their families enjoyed the annual EMBA Orientation and Family BBQ this past Saturday. The day began with an hour long meeting for new participants and their family members with advice and tips for success from program administrators and current EMBAs. The event then moved outside where new class members mingled with current and past participants. Great food, family fun, face painting, clowns, and sun were all on the menu this year; a great time was had by all. This event is a great way for EMBA’s to get started, and for alums to reunite and stay connected to the Boise State EMBA family.

First Annual Alumni Smyposium

The Boise State University Executive MBA Program will hold it’s first ever Alumni event in September. The event titled the “Annual Alumni Symposium” will take place on September 22 and be open to all EMBA program Alumni and current participants. As our program grows we hope to make this event a special place where all our alumni can reunite and reconnect with all their fellow EMBA’s while doing a little networking and having some fun!

Executive MBAs Graduate!

The third class of Executive MBA participants received their diplomas as part of the Boise State University 2011 Spring Commencement Ceremony on May 14th. Big smiles were displayed by all. Classmates were relieved to have finished the program but were also sad to put the friendships they had formed during the past two years into a new category. While their class time is over the relationships will continue long after the graduation ceremony. Learn more about the EMBA program and become a part of the next cohort (Class of 2013) at our Informational Open House, June 6.

Exec MBA Design Thinking Winners

Exec MBAs completed their Competitive Advantage module by segueing into Fostering Innovation’s course with a specialized Design Thinking Workshop. The simulation focused on creating a sustainable community in a fictional Northwest city. The winning team displays their “prize”; a reward for designing the best solution to helping the fictional town. Design Thinking is a novel way of approaching complex problems. It is one of the College of Business and Economics innovative, new teaching methods.

Ending activities for April included a tour of the Ada County Jail sponsored by Sheriff Gary Rainey who was a guest speaker during the Competitive Advantage module. Sheriff Rainey spoke about his ideas of creating competitive advantage through new revenue streams for the Ada County Sheriff’s Office.

EMBA’s Real-Time Learning Helps Boys and Girls Club of Ada County

EMBA student, Jason Sears (Class of 2012), is already applying the skills he learned in the latest EMBA session about presentations and use of powerpoint in his role as Operations Director at the Boys and Girls Club of Ada county.

Sears says, “I have found that much of what I’m learning in class can be applied directly to my work setting. The coaching and teaching in presentation methodologies and techniques have been particularly useful. The EMBA program has started generating returns for me at work long before I had expected when signing up. It’s a truly amazing learning experience!”
