			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On Thursday, October 28 a group of Economics students participated in the International Economic Summit in conjunction with the Frank Church Institute at Boise State University.  The three man team, which included Economics majors Barry Bakke and Steve Canty as well as Finance Major Jon Fulcher, represented Iceland.  They won Top High Income Country, Best Country Display, and came in second overall in the competition.  The International Economic Summit student competition focused on international trade and economic issues between the U.S., China and the rest of the world.</p>

<p><strong>Don Holley</strong> and history professor <strong>Todd Shallat</strong> were featured in a Channel 2 news story on the similarities between the 1929 stock market crash and the recent crisis on Wall Street.<span id="more-88"></span></p>
<p><strong>Don Holley</strong> was quoted in an <em>Idaho Statesman</em> story on the decline of Idaho&#8217;s economic growth following a 20-year boom.</p>
<p><strong>Zeynep Hansen</strong>, economics, along with colleague <strong>Marc Law</strong> from the University of Vermont, published an article in the prestigious <em>Journal of Law and Economics</em>, Vol. 51, No. 2: 251-269, titled &#8220;The Political Economy of Truth-in-Advertising Regulation during the Progressive Era.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Don Holley</strong> was interviewed by KBCI-TV on the Idaho Lottery and by the Idaho Statesman on the impact of the economic stimulus package on the local economy, especially retailers. Holley was also quoted in two stories in the May 1 <em>Idaho Statesman</em>. In the first, Holley commented on Micron&#8217;s role in the valley&#8217;s economy. In the second, about Boise&#8217;s No. 7 ranking on Forbes&#8217; list of worst cities for homeowner debt, Holley noted the decline in homeowner values was a national and not just a local problem.</p>
<p><strong>Don Holley</strong> was quoted in a Fox 12 news report on the rising cost of gasoline, and how that relates to a global economy.</p>
<p><strong>Sian Mooney</strong> was quoted in a recent &#8220;Farm Industry News&#8221; article that dealt with carbon credit trading. <p><strong>Siân Mooney</strong> presented &#8220;Suitability of Layered Basalt for Industrial CO2 Sequestration&#8221; to the Idaho Academy of Science Conference March 28. A new working paper, assessing the value of Idaho&#8217;s agricultural lands (Mooney, S. 2008. Jobs, Income, Services and Value: Economic Contributions of Maintaining Agricultural Lands to the State of Idaho. February), was quoted extensively in the Idaho Statesman on April 3. <strong>Mooney</strong> also presented a guest lecture &#8220;Economics of Carbon Sequestration and the Carbon Market: Selling the Invisible&#8221; on April 4 to ECON 498 &#8211; The Economics of Global Change.</p>
<p><strong>Scott Lowe</strong> authored &#8220;Housing Market Impacts of Inclusionary Zoning,&#8221; which appeared in the <em>National Association of Home Builders&#8217; Housing Affordability Research Report</em>, as a University of Maryland National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education report, and was quoted in the March 3 edition of Nation&#8217;s Building News.</p>
<p><strong>Geoff Black</strong> and <strong>Chris Loucks</strong> testified before the Idaho Senate Education Committee in support of Senate Bill 1406, Early Childhood Development and Education. This proposed bill would develop up to 10 pilot pre-kindergarten education programs throughout the state.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Don Holley</strong> recently provided economic analysis to the Idaho Department of Commerce in support of its effort to have legislation introduced to provide incentives for the development of the film industry in the state.<span id="more-91"></span></p>
<p><strong>Chris Louck</strong>s, Department of Economics, recently presented a paper, &#8220;PAC Contributions from Sectors of the Health Care Industry and Committee Membership in the House of Representatives, 1998-2002&#8243;, at the International Atlantic Economic Conference in Montreal, Canada.</p>
<p><strong>Don Holley</strong>, economics, was quoted in a KBCI Channel 2 story about how inflation is hitting local residents. Holley noted that wages and salaries are not keeping pace with rising costs.</p>
<p>In the past couple of weeks there has been a lot of interest in local and national economics. <strong>Don Holley</strong> has been interviewed three times by different reporters at the Statesman. The subjects have been housing, employment and restaurants. He was also interviewed by Channel 2 (CBS) on the consequences of layoffs at Albertsons.  Finally, he was also interviewed for an hour on KFXD radio and spoke to the local chapter of the BYU Management Society. Both times the subject was the local and national economic conditions and outlook.</p>
<p><strong>Don Holley</strong> was interviewed by Channel 2 and the Idaho Statesman about rebate checks and economic recovery.</p>

<p><strong>Dr. Scott Lowe</strong>, Economics, presented &#8220;Economics of Climate Change:  Measuring and Reducing Your Footprint&#8221; at the Business Symposium held at Boise State University, January 30th, 2008.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Sian Mooney</strong>, Economics, presented a seminar at Kansas State University on January 9th 2008 called &#8220;Carbon, Energy and Carbon Credit Markets&#8221;.</p>
<p>On January 4th, 2008, <strong>Don Holley</strong> and economists from the University of Idaho and Idaho State University presented their annual estimates of General Fund Revenues to the State Legislature.</p>
<p>In December, <strong>Don Holley</strong> was interviewed by the Statesman on wages and inflation in Idaho.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Sian Mooney</strong> (Dept. Economics) has been appointed to the Idaho Carbon Sequestration Advisory Committee. This is a governor&#8217;s committee charged with examining opportunities for emissions reductions and carbon trading for the State of Idaho.</p>
<p>In November, <strong>Dr. Don Holley</strong> was interviewed by the Statesman on the weakness of the housing market in the Treasure Valley.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Sian Mooney</strong> was the lunch speaker at Practical Paths 2007: Climate Change and Beyond, October 31st, 2007. Dr. Mooney spoke about the emerging market for carbon credits in her talk &#8220;Carbon Markets 101&#8243;. The conference was sponsored by the Idaho Council on Industry and Environment and Idaho Department of Environmental Quality.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Chris Loucks</strong> presented the paper, &#8220;PAC Contributions from Sectors of the Financial Services Industry&#8221;, at the International Atlantic Economic Conference, and chaired the Human Capital, Compensation, and Family Structure session.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Don Holley</strong> was interviewed by Channel 2 on the effect of Micron on the Treasure Valley.  He was also interviewed by Dave Fotsch of Central District Health for an article in a supplement to the Idaho Business Review on the economics of a pandemic.  The article appeared in supplement dated October 15.</p>
<p><strong>Drs Geoff Black, Scott Lowe and Siân Mooney</strong> participated in a panel discussion at the Environmental Sensing Symposium, Boise State University, October 25th.  The panel was organized by Dr. Lowe and addressed key governmental, regulatory and economic issues surrounding non-attainment of environmental goals and standards.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Zeynep Hansen</strong>, Associate Professor, has a paper accepted for publication and is forthcoming in Journal of Law and Economics. The title of the paper is &#8220;The Political Economy of Truth-in-Advertising Regulation during the Progressive Era&#8221; and it is co-authored with Dr. Marc Law, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics in University of Vermont.</p>
<p>Assistant Professor <strong>Scott Lowe</strong> will be chairing a panel discussion at the 2007 Environmental Sensing Symposium at Boise State University, October 25-27th. The panel, which includes Economics Department Chair <strong>Geoff Black</strong>, Boise State Associate Professor <strong>Sian Mooney</strong>, and Boise City Council Member Pro-tem Dr. Bill Eberle, will discuss the key governmental, regulatory, economic, and societal issues surrounding attainment and non-attainment of environmental goals and standards. In particular, the panel will discuss the technical and economic analyses of air quality standards and non-attainment in the airshed surrounding Boise, Idaho.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Chris Loucks</strong> was invited to serve on the Early Childhood ROI Task Force; the primary goal of the Early Childhood ROI (Return on Investment) Task Force is to guide the development and implementation of the business outreach and education module to make business leaders more aware of the importance of early childhood education.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Chris Loukcs</strong> participated in the Idaho Criminal Justice Commission Meeting, June 29, 2007, &#8220;Early Childhood Learning&#8211;Economic Impacts and Benefits&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Geoff Black</strong> was quoted in a story regarding the economic impact on the state, of the Idaho National Laboratory. An economic study conducted by Boise State University indicated that the INL plays a vital role in Idaho&#8217;s economy. The story ran in the Casper, Wyoming, Star Tribune.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Scott Lowe</strong> presented &#8220;Measuring the Effects of Environmental Regulations: the Critical Importance of Spatially Disaggregated Air Modeling&#8221; in the Joint Session of the History and Philosophy of Science, Psychology, and Social, Economic and Political Sciences Sections of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Pacific Division. <p><strong>Dr. Sian Mooney</strong> has a poster &#8220;Evaluation of Ponderosa Pine Management Practices Based on Economic Profitability and Opportunity of Receiving Carbon Credits&#8221; at the 88th annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Pacific Division, in Boise, ID. June 2007.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Sian Mooney</strong> has recently co-authored a book related to the environmental benefits of storing carbon in US soils. The book was published in May 2007 by Taylor and Francis Group and is called, &#8220;Soil Carbon Management: Economic, Environmental and Societal Benefits&#8221;.</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Samia Islam</strong> presented a paper at the Mid-Continent Regional Science Association (MCRSA) conference, June 7 &#8211; June 9, 2007 in Kansas City, MO. The co-authored paper (with John McIntosh of the CoBE Management Dept.) is titled: &#8220;Beyond the Veil: Women Entrepreneurs in Islamic Societies -The Case of Bahrain&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Dr. Samia Islam</strong> was selected to be a member of the Boise State Teaching Scholars (BSTS) group on Undergraduate Research. Ten faculty members were chosen from all the colleges and departments across campus to be a part of this group. The purpose of the BSTS program is to bring together faculty from various disciplines and study how undergraduate research can be integrated into courses for the benefit of both faculty and students. Each member of this group will apply the principles, theories, or strategies explored by the group in an individual project to assess the effectiveness of their work. Moreover, the group as a whole will generate a product based on their findings by the end of Spring 2008.</p>
