‘BAT’ Book Series Target Spooky Workplace Issues

For managers, there’s nothing spookier than not knowing how to handle a sticky situation, motivate employees or find new ways of doing things so an organization can improve. A new type of “BAT” might hold some answers.

The BAT book series — short for Business Aha! Tips — is a collection of snappy, easy-to-read books with tips and “Use it Now” sections for immediate application of ideas. Written by two Boise State University authors, the first book focuses on creativity and is now available at Amazon.com. (more…)

I just returned from a week in Hanoi and wonder if “going with the flow” may squelch creativity.

One night I sat with friends on a restaurant balcony overlooking one of the busiest plazas in the city. Nha Tho, or Church Street, is just over a block long and reflects the surface level economic change that defines Hanoi today. It’s full of boutiques like Ipa Nima, an international handbag shop that started in Hanoi, and eating places like Highlands Coffee Shop and Mediteranneo, the Italian restaurant that’s been in Hanoi since its owner and I both had brown hair. Now, we both have more white than brown.

One spring Saturday night, a patrol officer stopped two teenagers who were racing their cars along a highway near their upscale suburban homes. The officer ticketed each of the boys, sent them home and told them to talk to their parents about it. Normally, the story of law enforcement would end there. But this one doesn’t.
