A pizza that has caffeine?  Or does it?  It must have caffeine if it peps up? And could it have some medical benefit as well?  And those numbers?  Is that the size of the pizza – maybe six centimeters wide?”

Starfish… Go to google and look for images of starfish sometime. When I did, I was astounded and enchanted. I wished I majored in marine biology or at least grown up on a beach. Vivid colors, wildly varying shapes, and many types of textures. And then I started reading about them and became even more captivated.

Looking for ways to boost your creativity?  Plan a long trip and hope for problems.

I’m on my way to Seoul, Korea from my home in Boise, Idaho, for a “long weekend.” Yes, crazy but we’re going to visit someone who’s only got so much time these days.

We need structure, we need order, we need schedules and we need our system taught a certain way. But within that there needs to be creativity to keep growing, to keep the energy and the enthusiasm. What new wrinkles do we need to make us better?

Here’s a peek at her latest blog post:

I just returned from a week in Hanoi and wonder if “going with the flow” may squelch creativity.

One night I sat with friends on a restaurant balcony overlooking one of the busiest plazas in the city. Nha Tho, or Church Street, is just over a block long and reflects the surface level economic change that defines Hanoi today. It’s full of boutiques like Ipa Nima, an international handbag shop that started in Hanoi, and eating places like Highlands Coffee Shop and Mediteranneo, the Italian restaurant that’s been in Hanoi since its owner and I both had brown hair. Now, we both have more white than brown.

One spring Saturday night, a patrol officer stopped two teenagers who were racing their cars along a highway near their upscale suburban homes. The officer ticketed each of the boys, sent them home and told them to talk to their parents about it. Normally, the story of law enforcement would end there. But this one doesn’t.

Global business means more foreign business people are working in the US. While it might be home for us, it can be a cultural maze for them. We need to be creative and sensitive enough to see the situation from another perspective. In short, how do we un-baffle our foreign colleagues? Here are four areas that repeatedly confuse others:

  1. Language confusion
  2. Politeness masks reality
  3. Who’s in charge
  4. Personal relationships

Language confusion: How do you answer the following question?

Understand what this says?

Think of the last time you tossed out a wild idea at work?  Did everyone jump on it and tell you it was terrific?  Or did some snicker and say, “you’re kidding, right?”  I hope you got more of the former, but I’ll bet you’ve had some snickering too.

When that happens, ideas stop cold. (more…)
