Michael Bixby Receives Prestigious Award from the Academy of Legal Studies in Business

Recently retired COBE Professor Michael Bixby was honored at the 2012 Academy of Legal Studies in Business (ALSB) Annual Conference in Kansas City with the Distinguished Career Achievement Award. This prestigious award is only given when a truly distinguished colleague is nominated and has not been awarded since 2008.

The purpose of  the award is to recognize faculty members of the ALSB who serve as exemplars of excellence and are recognized as leaders and standard bearers. Nominees must have held a position as a professor of legal studies in business, legal and ethical environment of business or other related disciplines in a college or university for a total of twenty or more years; and must have been a member of the ALSB for a minimum of ten years.

Professor Bixby was a full time faculty member at Boise State from 1981-2011, teaching classes dealing with legal and regulatory issues. His undergraduate (B.A.) and law (J.D.) degrees are from the University of Michigan. Bixby practiced law as an attorney for 11 years in Michigan before becoming a faculty member at Boise State. Since joining Boise State, he has had 12 articles published in professional journals and has presented over 50 academic papers at conferences. Bixby has authored and co-authored 2 textbooks, currently in use by many business schools. The first one, The Legal Environment of Business (lead author) is now in its 4th edition (2008), published by Pearson Publications. In 2009 he co-authored the revised 5th edition of International Business Law, published by Prentice Hall.

Bixby is an active member of the National Academy of Legal Studies in Business, and has served as president of the Northwest Regional division of this organization. He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and a member of the Governing Council of the Corporate and Business Law Section of the State Bar of Idaho

In 2006 Professor Bixby was chosen as the winner of the Foundation Scholars Award for Teaching, the highest honor accorded to a faculty member at Boise State.  He has also been twice recognized as the faculty member of the year in the College of Business by the ASBSU student organization, and was the winner of the Teaching Award in the Management Department in 2008.
