COBE’s Use of Avatars Mentioned in U.S. New & World Report

An Aug. 15, 2012 article in US News & World Report (usnews.com/education) discussed the use of avatars in virtual worlds in graduate schools of business, including Boise State University College of Business and Economics.

Professors Jim Wanek and Dusty Bodie included virtual, avatar-based software from Vertical Learning Curve (VLC) in their team-taught online MBA human resource management and organizational behavior course during fall semester 2011. The software creates a virtual company environment with the student taking the role of a new intern for a simulated immersion experience.

This is the first entirely online course to be offered in the Boise State University Professional MBA program.

 

Boise’s New “Front Door” Opens with Dedication of Micron Business and Economics Building

Boise State University’s new Micron Business and Economics Building is officially open for business. A dedication ceremony this morning culminated with the ringing of a bell, following the Wall Street tradition of opening the New York Stock Exchange. A crowd of more than 400 filled the building’s new Skaggs Hall of Learning for the ceremony. (more…)

New Master’s Degree in Business Operational Excellence Approved

Boise State will offer a new master’s degree, the executive master of business operational excellence, beginning in May 2013. The Idaho State Board of Education approved the new program Aug. 16.

A unique partnership between Boise State’s College of Business and Economics and the Kaizen Institute Consulting Group—a worldwide leader in Lean and Six Sigma training—supports the new program. Both Boise State and Kaizen Institute instructors will help managers become organizational leaders in operational improvement during the 12-month master’s program.

Participants will blend distance education, four one-week on-campus sessions, project work at their own organizations, and a study mission to Tokyo, Japan. The focus is on the leadership, change management and process improvement skills necessary for those in health care, manufacturing, service industries, education and the public sector to compete on a global basis. The emphasis on Lean Six Sigma skills will make graduates particularly well suited to drive business excellence in any organization. (more…)

Boise Young Professionals Provide Mentoring to Career Start MBA Program

Boise State’s College of Business and Economics Career Start MBA program has partnered with Boise Young Professionals (BYP), a program of the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce, to offer b|linked, a peer mentoring opportunity between students and BYP members. The program will kick off at the end of August with up to 40 mentors paired with 40 first-year MBA students.

The idea behind b|linked is to introduce students preparing to enter the workforce to BYP and the community by pairing them with other young professionals that have already paved the way. (more…)

Gattiker Completes Term as Division Chair

Tom Gattiker, professor in Information Technology and Supply Chain Management, just completed his term as division chair of the Operations Management Division of the Academy of Management. He previously served the division as Conference Chair, Professional Development Workshop Chair and Doctoral Consortium Chair.

Grace Tuttle Joins COBE IT

Grace Tuttle has joined the College of Business and Economics as a customer service specialist. She previously served as an information manager for the U.S. Air Force, information technology analyst for the Idaho State Legislature, computer lab manager for Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., and as an IT systems support technician for the Idaho Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. She holds a bachelor’s degree in management information systems from Park College (cum laude) and a master’s of public administration from the University of Oklahoma.
