Deadline to Apply – Economic Summer Internships in Washington, D.C.

The 2012 Economic Research Services (ERS) summer intern program is now accepting applications. The intern program provides an excellent opportunity to work with ERS researchers on projects.

Young Entrepreneur Series-Speaker: Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Mason Fuller

A distinguished panel of young business leaders will share their personal stories, business tips and lessons learned during an interactive session. Speakers include Mason Fuller (SBA Young Entrepreneur of the Year) and Jenna Haener (local entrepreneur and BSU MBA alum). With youth unemployment twice the national average in many communities, SBA recognizes a need to promote and better support the efforts of young people looking to create jobs for themselves and others. Young entrepreneurs are a dynamic resource for our national recovery and growth.

The Young Entrepreneur Series (YES) is an initiative by the White House and SBA to connect young and aspiring entrepreneurs with SBA officials, local business advisors and resources to help them start or grow their own small business.

* YES brings together leading young entrepreneurs, youth advocacy organizations and government experts to listen, address critical challenges and formulate public policy measures needed to move the young entrepreneur’s business agenda to the next level.

* YES connects young entrepreneurs to each other, the federal government and other economic development resources.

* YES engages young people to discuss entrepreneurship.

Deadline for New Students to Apply for Fall 2012 Scholarships

The deadline for new and transfer students to apply for scholarships to Boise State University for the fall 2012 semester is fast approaching. In order to be considered for Boise State scholarships, students must submit all materials to the Admissions Office no later than Feb. 15.

To be considered for scholarships, new and transfer students must do the following:

The application deadline for financial aid for current Boise State students is March 15. Students who apply early have the best chance of being eligible for many limited types of federal aid. Early applicants also stand a better chance of ensuring that their funding is available when classes begin in the fall.

COBE Student Chosen for Prestigious Internship


Jared Musick
has been selected for a one-year internship at the Financial Accounting Standards Board in Norwalk, CT. The program is exceedingly competitive with only a handful of interns chosen each year from a large pool of nominees submitted by the accounting programs from many of the leading US business schools. Jared graduated in December 2011 with a 2nd undergraduate degree in accountancy and master of science in accountancy. (more…)

Kelly Cobourn, Zeynep Hansen and Scott Lowe of the Department of Economics presented research pertaining to water rights institutions at the American Economics Association (AEA) meetings in Chicago on Jan. 8. Cobourn and Hansen organized and moderated the session titled “Water Rights: Historical Perspectives and Emerging Issues.” Hansen and Lowe presented a paper titled “The Political Economy of Major Water Infrastructure Investments in the Western United States and the Impact on Agriculture,” and Cobourn presented a paper titled “Property Rights and Conjunctive Management: Implications of Hydraulic Connectivity between Surface and Ground Water.” The acceptance rate for sessions at the AEA meetings is about 3 percent to 4 percent for institutions similar to Boise State.

Cobourn also gave an invited oral presentation at the American Geophysical Union meetings in San Francisco on Dec. 7, 2011. The presentation, titled “Ecological vs. Economic Sustainability: An Integrated Analysis of Thresholds in Semi-Arid Western Rangelands,” was included as part of the session “Identifying and Quantifying Change in Ecological Systems.”

Executive MBA Open House

Boise State’s Executive MBA program will hold an open house for prospective students and interested companies from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 25 in the Stueckle Sky Center at Bronco Stadium. Those planning to attend should email emba@boisestate.edu or call 426-4034 to reserve a space.

Classes will begin in September 2012 and participants will earn an MBA degree in two academic years of part-time class attendance. The program is designed specifically for middle- to senior-level professionals who want to gain the leadership, business and innovation skills their organizations need on a schedule that minimizes work and personal life disruption.

Boise State’s Executive MBA was launched in 2006 and focuses on creativity in the evaluation of business problems, an immediate link between class projects and work tasks, an integrated curriculum that takes into account a wide range of business units and a trade mission-style international experience in Vietnam.

The program has earned very high marks in an independent survey of its graduates by the international Executive MBA Council, and 81 percent of graduates have said their Executive MBA degree had a positive impact on their careers.

College Announces Newly Designed MBA Programs

Boise State’s College of Business and Economics has redesigned its Master of Business Administration (MBA) offerings to create three tracks — a unique full-time MBA program to help recent graduates enter the work force, a part-time evening program to help working professionals create career options and continuation of the highly successful Executive MBA program.
