COBE Center Releases Study on Economic Impact of Downtown Arena

Boise State University’s Center for Business Research and Economic Development has released a study on the impact of CenturyLink Arena (formerly Qwest Arena) in downtown Boise showing that the arena and its affiliated sports franchises are a significant contributor to the local economy, pumping in about $7.7 million each year.

Economics professor Don Holley, who has been studying Idaho’s economy for more than three decades, was the lead researcher on the first-ever analysis of the arena’s operations. Arena owners Block 22 requested and provided funding for the assessment. (more…)

Expert to Discuss State of U.S. Economy Nov. 11

The College of Business and Economics speaker series will present a free talk with economics expert G. Alex Sinclair at 1:45 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in the Student Union Simplot B Ballroom.

COBE Presents Lessons from Alumni Nov. 1-4

The College of Business and Economics will present the annual Lessons from Alumni events Nov. 1-4. More than 60 panelists, the majority of whom are alumni, will share their career development stories with students throughout the week.

Highlights include a kick-off breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday and a round table session from 2:30-4 p.m. Wednesday, where students will have the opportunity to talk directly with business and community leaders about their career goals. Both events will be held in the Simplot Ballroom. (more…)

Economic Summit Simulates Competitive Global Marketplace

Two hundred and fifty university and high school students from across Idaho will compete at Boise State on Thursday, Oct. 27, in the second annual Frank Church International Economic Summit. The Idaho Council on Economic Education has served as an outreach program and center for Boise State’s College of Business and Economics and the College of Education since 1971. The council has teamed up with the College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs to provide the Frank Church Economic Summit. (more…)

Faculty Spotlight – Don Holly

Don Holley, professor of economics, was quoted in a StateImpact story about the three Rs: recession, recovery and relevance. Holley states that signs of economic recovery are there, including a leveling off in unemployment and improved home and auto sales. However, Holley points out that Idaho is not yet back to its 2007 economic productivity peak. Read the story here.

Faculty Spotlight – Sian Mooney

Sian Mooney, Department of Economics, is co-chair on a report released last week called “Carbon Sequestration and Greenhouse Gas Fluxes in Agriculture.” The team of scientists also includes Ron Follett and Jack Morgan, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Keith Paustian, Colorado State University. In addition to a focus on agriculture’s role in climate change, the report also covers key economic, social and environmental challenges.

Bio:

Alex Sinclair is originally from Twin Falls, Idaho. After earning his bachelor’s degree from Seattle University in Accounting, he started his career with the accounting firm, Price Waterhouse & Co. He moved into the commodities and currency trading business as a member of both the New York Mercantile Exchange and the Pacific Stock Exchange. The software he developed to run his commodities business is now used by major firms such as Cargill and ADM to run their commodities divisions.

He served as President of Sinclair & Company which continues as a full service commodity futures and options trading firm. Today, Alex continues to trade currencies and interest rates and is considered a leading thinker on economic policy and is a regular contributor to the Wall Street Journal economic and financial forums.
