Alumni Spotlight – Pham Quang Trung & Nguyen Van Thang

In November 2010, two distinguished alumni from our Vietnam Chapter (both from MBA class 1995) have been recognized by the Vietnam State Council for the Title of Professors ((http://www.hdcdgsnn.gov.vn/) with these prestigious title:

Dr Pham Quang Trung, president of the Alumni Chapter and Vice Rector of National Economics University, has been conferred the title of Professor.

Dr Nguyen Van Thang, Director of the Asia-Pacific Management Institute under NEU, has been conferred the title of Associate Professor.

Alumni Spotlight – Dr. Stewart Lawrence

Medical Director, Mountain States Neonatology and St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center Newborn Intensive Care Unit

Dr. Lawrence attended college at Wesleyan University of Middletown, Connecticut where he received a B.A. in Biology, followed an M.D. from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. He trained as a pediatric intern and resident at Duke University Medical Center and completed a 3-year fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at University of Texas-Southwestern Medical Center, where he engaged in developmental biology research, culminating in publications in Pediatric Research.

Dr. Lawrence is boarded in Pediatrics and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and has served in many leadership positions, including, most recently, Physician Leader of the Integrated Delivery Council and Director of Telemedicine at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. Dr. Lawrence’s experience in telemedicine, in conjunction with his participation in a proposed video conferencing initiative as a project toward his recent completion of an Executive M.B.A. at Boise State University, has been the source of his interest in Conex.

Faculty Spotlight – Shawn Novak

Shawn Novak, associate professor of accountancy, was a guest on “Think Wing Radio” with host Mike Honig on Talk 650, KIKK in Houston, Texas. Novak discussed tax topics such as the capital gains tax and the alternative minimum tax, as well as issues like the recent report released by the Deficit Reduction Commission and the impact of stimulus programs on the economy.

COBE Tackles Design Thinking, Export Excellence

The College of Business and Economics (COBE) just completed two innovative new projects — a “design thinking” session and an international export program — aimed at forming a strong network among academic experts and business leaders and giving students valuable experiences.

The college received $70,000 in start-up funds from 2007 Fiesta Bowl proceeds for the design thinking project. Modeled after a program at Stanford, it matched teams of leaders from participating companies — Biomark, Intermountain Gas Company, Preco Electronics and St. Luke’s Health System — with business faculty members and a student. The teams met several times this semester to learn the design thinking process and tackle a looming but ill-defined problem within each company. (more…)

Executive MBA Program Ranked Among Best Worldwide

Boise State University’s Executive MBA program earned very high marks for the second consecutive year in an independent survey of its graduates by the international Executive MBA Council. Boise State’s program scored 9.4 out of 10 for overall performance. The average rating for all programs worldwide was 8.5.

The Executive MBA Council, comprising more than 200 colleges and universities that administer programs in 25 countries, hired an outside firm to conduct the exit survey with Boise State’s 2010 Executive MBA graduates, the second class to graduate since the program began four years ago. (more…)

U.S. News Ranks COBE Among Best Undergraduate Programs

With a growing reputation for teaching excellence, innovative academic programs, meaningful research and support for economic development in the region, the College of Business and Economics at Boise State has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the country’s Best Undergraduate Business Programs in their 2011 rankings.

The exclusive rankings, which include information on more than 1,400 schools nationwide, are available at www.usnews.com.

Demolition Begins to Make Way for New Building

Demolition began last week on the University Inn at the corner of Capitol and University. The remaining portion of the structure, the old Iron Gate Lounge, will be torn down on Saturday, Nov. 13, to make way for the new Micron Business and Economics Building and western gateway to campus. (more…)

Student Spotlight – Kamilla Gazieva

Kamilla Gazieva, a Boise State Muskie Fellow who is from Russia and is a graduate student in the MBA program at Boise State was recently featured in a Muskie News Article.

Faculty Spotlight – Lincoln & Neupert

Doug Lincoln, professor of marketing and chair of the Department of Marketing and Finance, and Kent Neupert, director of Boise State’s Center for Entrepreneurship, were quoted in a recent Idaho Business Review article about the rapid growth of Scentsy, a Meridian-based direct sales company.
